How the PSCL improves the impact of employees' daily travel.
Employee commuting, commonly called home-to-work commuting in Italy, is a crucial aspect of modern working life. Every day, millions of people commute from home to work and back, facing numerous challenges along the way. This phenomenon affects not only the lives of individual workers, but also theenvironment, the liveability of urban spaces and theeconomy in general.
All medium to large-sized companies are required to present a Sustainability Report every year, in addition to the Financial Report, which is divided into 3 macro-categories: Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3.
Thus, exploring the dynamics ofemployee commuting allows companies to better understand the impact that daily home-work travel has on the entire value chain, especially in indirect polluting factors (Scope 3).
In fact, employee commuting is among the 15 Categories to be quantified to discover a company's indirect pollutant emissions. In particular, Category 7 refers precisely to emissions from daily employee commuting. This data, fundamental for the completeness of Sustainability Reports, can be calculated through engineering formulas, provided by the GHG Protocol.
The implementation of Home-Work Travel Plans (HWMPs) is therefore preparatory to obtaining this figure and more. In fact, the company that makes the PSCL not only manages to obtain the data for Category 7 "Employee Commuting", but also obtains a broad view of the state of mobility in its company and can begin to implement policies that improve these conditions, providing a fundamental benefit to its employees and reducing the environmental impact of this category.
THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF EMPLOYEE COMMUTING
The home-to-work commute represents one of the most important stress factors of an employee's working day and, in addition to the environmental one, thesocial impact is really significant on the increasingly important work-life balance. Smart working was a first solution to solve this problem, but with the increasingly progressive return to pre-Covid life and the profound changes cities are experiencing, it is not enough.
In fact, more than 62% of employees do not find the mobility policies implemented by the company satisfactory. To mitigate the negative impacts on health and the environment, companies must strongly facilitate all mobility alternatives to the private car.
